The Curtiss H-16 Shawnee was an American single-engine, conventional takeoff and landing biplane fighter aircraft of the 1930s. It was proposed by Curtiss-Wright as a successor to the Curtiss Fledgling and was designed to meet the Navy's demand for a long-range fighter.
Design and development
The design team consisted of five senior engineers from the Curtiss-Wright company, Frederick Spiteller, Charles Kirkham, Kenneth R. Burke, George S. Abbot, and Richard E. Byrd. In 1931, the design was designated the H-16. The original design had a fixed landing gear but a wheeled landing gear was an option. The H-16 was designed to be powered by the Wright-Hispano J-6B engine.
The prototype (YT-9) was named "Lucky Lathrop". It had a four-bladed propeller which was later replaced by the five-bladed Curtiss P-11-AW type. The first production aircraft (XH-10) was delivered in April 1935.
In September 1933, a "two-seat" H-16 design (XH-19) was ordered by the US Navy and designated as be359ba680
